Keeping the heart open is no easy task.We know not only our own pain and our neighbor's pain, but also the agonies played out in the farthest reaches of this earth. We allow ourselves to see, to care, to witness. Marilyn Sewell

How little do we know that which we are!
How less what we may be.
Lord Byron

Holotropic Breathwork tm is a powerful method of self-exploration, personal transformation and healing. Holotropic literally means "moving toward wholeness". Developed by Stan Grof, M.D., and Christina Grof, leaders in the field of Transpersonal Psychology, Holotropic Breathwork tm combines insights from modern consciousness research, depth psychology and various spiritual practices. Holotropic Breathwork tm helps participants reach non-ordinary states of consciousness through deep breathing, evocative music and focused release work. It activates the unconscious and mobilizes blocked energies to access all levels of human experience, including unfinished issues from childhood, physical or emotional trauma, perinatal memories, death and rebirth sequences, and a variety of transpersonal experiences. Facilitated by the breath and encouraging surrender to the wisdom of the body and psyche, the non-ordinary state induced by the breathing offers unusual healing potential.
The Process

The workshop takes place in a protected space where the process can be individual and internal. One person (the designated "breather") lies on the floor, eyes closed, and breathes more rapidly and deeply than usual. Music is played that is conducive to the buildup and release of physical and emotional tension. The individual’s own psyche is the director of the experience. Focused body work is available to help the "breather" discharge blocked energy at the end of the session. The other person (the "sitter") is present to protect and support the "breather".

In addition to the actual Breathwork session, time is set aside for mandala drawing and group- processing of the experiences that occur during the breathing sessions. The group-processing is an important element to help people express and integrate their depth experiences into their everyday lives. In the setting created by Holotropic Breathwork tm, the true depths of the psyche can emerge, leading to healing and personal transformation.

Holotropic Breathwork tm is highly experiential and may involve intense and energetic forms of emotional release. The workshop does not substitute for psychotherapy, but it can deepen and enhance psychotherapy, 12-Step programs, and many other efforts aimed at healing and growth.
